Is Pakistan Taking Coronavirus (COVID-19) Too Lightly?

Image
Pakistan is heading toward a coronavirus emergency, yet the response of PM Khan's government has so far been unsatisfactory. Experts say the country could face a huge catastrophe if the authorities don't act properly. "What can we do about the coronavirus? One can die of a heart attack. Death is inevitable and it could come anywhere," a security guard at a super market in Karachi’s Clifton area told DW on Tuesday. Other people DW spoke to in Karachi echoed more or less the same views. Karachi is Pakistan's financial hub with a population of around 20 million people. Around 30 COVID-19 cases have so far been reported in the metropolis, and around 250 nationwide, out of which the southern Sindh province has reported more than 181. Authorities reported the South Asian country's first coronavirus-related death from Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday. Read more about: South Asia leaders to discuss how to tackle coronavirus. The leaders of eight South Asian nations are set to discuss via video conference a strategy to stop the spread of COVID-19. Over 120 cases have so far been reported across the region. South Asian nations will come together for the first time in more than five years on Sunday to discuss the outbreak of the novel coronavirus and chart a roadmap to prevent it from spreading across the region. The meeting, to be held via video conference, was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. Modi called on the leaders of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to "chalk out a strong strategy" to deal with the pandemic. While almost all South Asian leaders are expected to attend the virtual summit, Pakistan said it will be represented by its Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Zafar Mirza. "The threat of #COVID-19 requires coordinated efforts at the global and regional level. We have communicated that SAPM on Health wi

Why cable operators ordered to Shut down Geo TV or shift channel to last numbers?

Image
ISLAMABAD: Cable operators throughout Pakistan started receiving orders to immediately shut down Geo TV's broadcast or shift the channel to the last numbers right after SAPM Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan concluded her Friday press conference pertaining to the arrest of Jang Group/Geo Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman. The channel was shifted to last numbers in various cities and its broadcast was also disrupted after Dr Firdous' presser. Geo News' Director News Rana Jawad said the directives to cable operators came from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). "Cable operators are being asked to change Geo's position [on TV channel numbers]. Shifting the channel to the last numbers means shutting down its broadcast," he said. Jawad said these instructions were also given to the main cable operator in Islamabad and that no legal basis was provided for the action. He said that PEMRA was threatening to take legal actions against cable opera

Why karachi building collapse? And lost 27 lives

Image
ANOTHER tragic building collapse has claimed 27 lives because of criminal neglect by officials of some departments of the Sindh government. Whenever such a tragedy happens the Sindh chief minister orders an inquiry report be submitted by the authorities concerned. The same has happened in the recent building collapse in Golimar. I am astonished how the officials of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) allowed a six-storey building to be constructed on an 80-yard plot and that too in a densely populated area with narrow lanes. How come no Sindh government or Karachi city administration official took notice. Another such building is being constructed in front of my residence in Garden East. Almost daily from my window I see construction in progress by a firm that is neither qualified nor registered with the Pakistan Engineering Council I have also observed that the labour contractor, instead of using a ratio of four crush and two sand for the concrete mix, was

Mark Cuban’s 9 Steps for Efficiently Building Wealth? Easy steps for earning money

It  always seems like we never have enough money or time. If only we had more money would we then have more time. Fortunately, you can learn from billionaires like Mark Cuban on how to grow your bank account. Let’s start 1. Live like a Student This one is pretty easy.
